CJ Baricevic, Democratic candidate for the Illinois 12th Congressional District, reminded the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) who were part of a crowded auditorium at Lindenwood University in Belleville, Illinois, host of the only debate between those who will represent the metro-east before the Nov. 8 election, “No matter how complicated, we need to address everyone’s daily lives, see what they are confronted with and how their problems could be much better served if we had a strong advocate in D.C. opposed to continuing the partisan gridlock. People are tired of all the excuses and a lack of progress in Southern Illinois,” he said.

Jack Locandro from Collinsville, Illinois, was a retiree from Granite City Steel and a very active behind the scenes supporter of countless SOAR causes, passed away on Monday August 22, 2016. Memorials may be made to the Shriners or to Granite City SOAR Group.

The Granite City SOAR Chapter (7-34-2) held our 6th Annual “Jane Becker” Scholarship/Award Banquet on Monday August 10th. The banquet was well attended with over 175 members, friends, allies and elected officials in attendance. Read more >>>
On July 30th 1965 President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare Act into Law. To mark this anniversary on Tuesday July 28th four Granite City SOAR members Jeff Rains George Schneider Marleen Carey and Dennis Barker delivered a “Happy 50th Birthday to Medicare” cake to Illinois Congressman Mile Bost’s office in Belleville. On Wednesday July 15th the monthly breakfast club of the Granite City Chapter of the Steelworker Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) held our annual John Lunk memorial fish fry. Read more >>>
Chapter 7-34-2 decided to make Christmas a little bit nicer for the troops serving in Africa fighting the Ebola crisis. We collected 16 gift boxes and shipped them to soldiers of 101st Airborne Division with a letter from the chapter wishing them a Merry Christmas. The letter also included thanks for making the world a safer place, for their sacrifice and service. Read more >>>

John Lunk was a retired Millwright Leader from the Hot Strip and John always loved to have a fish fry at his house until his untimely death. So the retirees have continued the tradition of John’s fish fry holding it on the shores of Horseshoe Lake. Read more >>>

The party was well attended by over 200 participants with many State and Madison County elected officials in attendance. Judge Ann Callis candidate for Illinois' 13th Congressional District was also in attendance. Read more >>>
At the November meeting of the Granite City SOAR Chapter 7-34-2 our members brought bags and bags of supplies, snacks and much needed items for our troops currently serving overseas. There were enough items donated to fill 14 boxes that will be sent to Afghanistan hopefully they will arrive in time for Christmas. Each box also contained a personal note from SOAR members.
