With the assistance from SOAR Chapter members in Granite City, Illinois, Shirley Luffman has completed another leg of her ongoing mission. For 17 years now she has coordinated the shipment of bountiful boxes to troops serving overseas, with this year’s shipment directed to those currently deployed in Afghanistan. This latest batch was assembled and labeled for delivery before Thanksgiving, with more to be sent following the next SOAR meeting. Many Americans have found it far too easy to become callous about the fact that real lives are being affected when partisan politics obstructs progress in D.C.

CJ Baricevic, Democratic candidate for the Illinois 12th Congressional District, reminded the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) who were part of a crowded auditorium at Lindenwood University in Belleville, Illinois, host of  the only debate between those who will represent the metro-east before the Nov. 8 election, “No matter how complicated, we need to address everyone’s daily lives, see what they are confronted with and how their problems could be much better served if we had a strong advocate in D.C. opposed to continuing the partisan gridlock. People are tired of all the excuses and a lack of progress in Southern Illinois,” he said.

Jack Locandro from Collinsville, Illinois, was a retiree from Granite City Steel and a very active behind the scenes supporter of countless SOAR causes, passed away on Monday August 22, 2016. Memorials may be made to the Shriners or to Granite City SOAR Group.
Any donations made to the Granite City SOAR Chapter wil be used to provide a scholarship next year in Jack's name.
His family will be holding a celebration of life in Jack's memory on Sunday August 28th 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Granite City, Ill KC Hall. Read more >>>

Turning a generational belief on its head that the young don’t often work in unison with seasoned retirees that they have never met, new freshmen students from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville combined their Service Experience with the Granite City, Illinios SOAR Chapter in a laborious but fruitful community effort.

USW District 7 SOAR Coordinator Scott Marshall expressed the imperative that we all return to our chapters and refocus our attention to push back against all the forces that are contributing to the downward spiral of our middle class. The obscene money coming from dark sources which contribute to our distortions in politics in the U.S. , and that is being supplemented in power and spirit by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling must be countered with our voices and our votes. The Granite City SOAR Chapter (7-34-2) held our 6th Annual “Jane Becker” Scholarship/Award Banquet on Monday August 10th. The banquet was well attended with over 175 members, friends, allies and elected officials in attendance. Read more >>>

On July 30th 1965 President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare Act into Law. To mark this anniversary on Tuesday July 28th four Granite City SOAR members Jeff Rains George Schneider Marleen Carey and Dennis Barker delivered a “Happy 50th Birthday to Medicare” cake to Illinois Congressman Mile Bost’s office in Belleville. On Wednesday July 15th the monthly breakfast club of the Granite City Chapter of the Steelworker Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) held our annual John Lunk memorial fish fry. Read more >>>

Chapter 7-34-2 decided to make Christmas a little bit nicer for the troops serving in Africa fighting the Ebola crisis. We collected 16 gift boxes and shipped them to soldiers of 101st Airborne Division with a letter from the chapter wishing them a Merry Christmas. The letter also included thanks for making the world a safer place, for their sacrifice and service. Read more >>>

SOAR again participated in the 2014 Labor Day Solidarity Parade in Granite City.

Wednesday July 9th the monthly breakfast club of the Granite City Chapter of the Steelworker Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) held our annual John Lunk memorial fish fry.

John Lunk was a retired Millwright Leader from the Hot Strip and John always loved to have a fish fry at his house until his untimely death. So the retirees have continued the tradition of John’s fish fry holding it on the shores of Horseshoe Lake. Read more >>>

Gov. Pat Quinn joined his Missouri counterpart Governor Jay Nixon with former Illinois Congressman Jerry Costello in attendance with many other politicians at the ribbon-cutting for a new bridge over the Mississippi at St. Louis. Read more >>>

A special gate collection conducted by Granite City Works United Steelworkers Local Unions 50, 68, and 1899 on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 for the family of Antonino Palazzolo was a huge success.

Today we met with Illinois Congressman William Enyart (D-12th District) talking about the Chained CPI (Social Security cuts), extending Unemployment Insurance Benefits and the proposed Fast Track Legislation which would swiftly move a new free trade agreement called the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) through Congress. The Granite City SOAR Chapter collected and donated $440.00 towards the gate collections to be held January 22, 2014 at Granite City Works for the family of fatally injured USW member Antonino Palazzolo. Brother Palazzolo, 32 died December 15th, 2013 as a result of a molten metal explosion at USS Great Lakes Works. Read more >>>

On Monday December 9th SOAR held our annual Christmas party.

The party was well attended by over 200 participants with many State and Madison County elected officials in attendance. Judge Ann Callis candidate for Illinois' 13th Congressional District was also in attendance. Read more >>>

Christmas Gift Boxes Sent to our Brave Men and Women serving Overseas….........Dennis

At the November meeting of the Granite City SOAR Chapter 7-34-2 our members brought bags and bags of supplies, snacks and much needed items for our troops currently serving overseas. There were enough items donated to fill 14 boxes that will be sent to Afghanistan hopefully they will arrive in time for Christmas. Each box also contained a personal note from SOAR members.

(Annual John Lunk Memorial Fish Fry) Wednesday July 16th the Steelworker Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) skips their bi-monthly morning breakfast to attend the John Lunk annual memorial fish fry. John Lunk was a retired Millwright Leader from the Hot Strip and John always loved to have a fish fry at his house until his untimely death.
